5th International Poetry Slam Cyprus 2022

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, 13, 14, 15 March 2022

The 5th International Poetry Slam Cyprus, 2022 held at ARTOS House
was by far the best one yet, and a huge success!
The participants, poet-slammers competitors and Guest Slammers
as well as the audience enjoyed two nights
full of surprises, upturns and high calibre performances …

Melissa Zanga - 2022 Cyprus National Poetry Slam Champion,
Andros Zachariou - 1st Runner Up
Katerina Constantinou - 2nd Runner Up

Adriana Bertran (Spain) - Winner 5th Poetry Slam Cyprus 2022,
Katharina Wenty (Austria) – 1st Runner Up
Matic Ačko (Slovenia) – 2nd Runner Up

A novelty of this year’s competition was the online voting of the Popular Slammer!

And on Monday it was won by the declared Cyprus Champion Melissa Zanga and on Tuesday by Shreya Aneja from India, for the second year running!

Two exceptional poet slammers Sergio Garau from Italy and the twice National Champion of Cyprus (2019 and 2021, with 2020 having no competition) Argyris Loizou were the invited Guest Slammers, who performed out of competition.

The invited poet-slammers from abroad who competed were: Katharina Wenty - Austria; Adriana Bertran – Spain; Natalya O’ Flaherty – Ireland; Maria Kouimtsidi – Greece; Matic Ačko – Slovenia; Shreya Aneja – India.

The Cyprus based poet-slammers were invited with an Open Call and there were 16 contestants: Maria Kouvarou; Stavros Khachatryan; Adonis Sergiou; Efi Kalorkoti; Kyriaki Ttanti; Kathleen Ruddy; Reem Maghribi; Andros Zacharia; Toria Maugain; Michael-Angelos Englezos; Stavros X. Petrou; Grace Kanaki; Leni Christou; Melissa Zanga; Katerina Constantinou; Ilias Tsagas.

On Sunday, the day before the competitions, all guests from abroad together with the jury and other invited guests (slammers, friends, etc) met at the possibly oldest bookshop on the island, Rüstem Kitabevi, in the occupied section of Nicosia, in an informal get to know each other event, where they performed their poems.

The judging committee consisted of Constantinos Papageorgiou – poet, psychotherapist, adult educator; Ahmet Yikik – academic, literary critic, translator; Anthi Antoniadou – actress-performer, archaeologist, poet, cultural activist; Catherine Nikita – cultural management, curator, art consultant; Lia Lapithi – visual artist;

James Mackay, academician, poet, performer, slammer was the Master of Ceremonies, and a very good one too!

Monday as well as Tuesday started with performances by Sergio Garau and Argyris Loizou, about who Matic said in one of his comments … Sergio saves all his energy for the time he spends on stage shouting and running to his extremely witty lyrics… Argyris Loizou just sits on his chair reciting and shows us why he won the Cyprian championship twice.

On Monday there was one round and the committee selected the

The Six Finalists that joined the six invited guests from abroad in the competition of Tuesday and they were: Andros Zacharia; Ilias Tsagas; Katerina Constantinou; Melissa Zanga; Stavros Khatcharyan; Stavros X. Petrou, as well as
